Beginning Something New
May 8, 2025
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
When Moses died, God chose Joshua to lead the Israelites across the Jordan River and into the land God had promised. God had rescued them from slavery in Egypt, but the Israelites, because of their disobedience, wandered in the desert for forty years. At last, God led them to the border of the land He had for them. Something new was about to begin, and Joshua had been chosen to lead them into this new day.
This was going to be a big, big job. Not only would Joshua need to lead a people who had proven to be difficult and at times disobedient, he would also have to lead them against enemies occupying the land God had given them. It would be a daunting task, but again and again God encouraged Joshua to be strong and courageous. Listen to this word from God: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9 NIV).
We certainly aren’t the Israelites wandering in the desert, but we are beginning something new, and I would suggest that God’s word to Joshua is applicable to all who are starting a new thing in the Lord. New seasons of life and ministry require of us strength, courage, and faithfulness.
But be encouraged! God will be with us as we go.
As I write this, I have only been here a few days, and already you have made my family and me feel so welcome—from the delicious meals and treats to the warm reception we received on our first Sunday. On behalf of my whole family, I want to say thank you for kindness!
Among my first priorities is getting to know as many of you as I can, so please feel free to stop by or reach out to me. We are also working to create some opportunities for us to connect as well. I can’t wait to learn about you, your families, and how you are growing and living in Christ!
Friends, I am so excited to be joining with you in mission and ministry, and I thank God that He has brought us together. While new things can sometimes be scary, let us put our trust in the One who promises to always be with us; let us be strong and courageous as we seek God’s will for Leeds First Methodist, and let us be obedient in following where He leads.
Grace and peace,
Brandon
